So, often we see ourselves through clouded lenses; through natural or worldly filters. I am reminded of the time that Jesus asked his disciples to tell him who people say that he is. They answered that people believed that he was John the Baptist or Elijah or Jeremiah. He then asked them, “But who do you say that I am.” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Then Jesus told Peter that this was not revealed to him by man, but by his Father in heaven. (Matthew 16:13-17) Now Jesus wanted more than a head knowledge of him. He wanted his disciples to see beyond the miracles that he performed. He wanted them to have a revelation of him as their Messiah; as their Savior. Flesh and blood would never have revealed that to them.
How often do we, as Christians, see ourselves through flesh and blood—earthly lenses of lineages, education, careers or financial status? How many of us have a true revelation of who we are in Christ?.
This year has brought me to a point in my life where I am seeking more fully, revelation of my purpose beyond earthly credentials and plaudits—even beyond good works in the kingdom. I have sought that revelation of “Who I am” through Jesus.
Of course, I am and have been a child of God who accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior for years. However, for so many years I saw myself as a Christian parent, a Christian teacher, a Christian school administrator, and yes, a Christian leader. I have had to get before my God and allow Heavenly Father to reveal to me “Who I am.” He has been speaking to me all along, but I just had not been listening before.
As I recovered from a traumatic injury and sickness this year, I prayed that I would come out of this episode, a better person than I was before the injury. That in itself, was a revelation; however, the Holy Spirit also began to reveal past episodes of divine reveals in my life. Holy Spirit brought to my remembrance the time when, as a teacher, standing in the back of my classroom, I heard the Lord say that he was putting his mantle on me. I was reminded that being commissioned a licensed a minister and ordained an elder in my home church, were not worldly mantles. They were ministerial positions bestowed upon me by God! In those years after leaving that church on a sabbatical, when asked about my credentials and career positions, I would share my multiple degrees and my prestigious positions. I failed to acknowledge the most important position in my life.
So, during this year, I have asked the Lord not to let me leave this earth without fulfilling my purpose. In seeking “to know” my Lord on a different level—I have received the revelation I have sought. I have received revelation of “who I am.” I am a divine minister of my Lord, Jesus Christ, sent here to carry out his gospel. That is first and foremost!
Have you sought Father God for a divine revelation of your true identity? Those credentials, degrees, financial benefits, prestigious positions (even Christian ones) are not who you are. They have just put you in a position and set you up to be used for your kingdom purposes. When you get that revelation, you’ll “see” all things differently.
May you have a blessed Christmas holiday.
